PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the close supervision of the Supervisor-Natural Gas & Water Engineering or designee, performs entry level engineering duties involving routine and repetitive tasks necessary for the completion of the department's goals. Duties will be dependent upon the individual job classification and departmental workload and may include any or all of the duties described below.
Under the direction of the Supervisor-Natural Gas & Water Engineering or designee, performs independent professional and technical engineering duties necessary for the completion of the department's goals. Duties will be dependent upon the individual job classification and departmental workload and may include any or all of the duties described below. This position may supervise Co-op employees.
(ENGINEER III – NATURAL GAS & WATER may supervise designers or other engineers in addition to co-ops.)
Under the direction of the Supervisor-Natural Gas & Water Engineering or designee, acts as a lead for major projects and performs independent professional and technical engineering duties necessary for the completion of the department's goals. May supervise designers, other engineers, or co-ops. Duties will be dependent upon the individual job classification and departmental workload and may include any or all of the duties described below.
Bachelor's degree in applicable engineering discipline from a school with a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology is required.
Engineering experience in applicable field is preferred but not required.
A minimum of three years of engineering design experience in applicable field is required with utility experience preferred.
A minimum of five years of recent engineering design experience applicable to the natural gas or water industries is required with utility experience preferred. Seven or more years of recent engineering design experience in an applicable field will be acceptable in lieu of the five years of specific experience.
A minimum of eight years of recent engineering design experience applicable to the - natural gas or water industries is required with utility experience preferred. Ten or more years of recent engineering design experience in an applicable field will be acceptable in lieu of the eight years of specific experience.
Must have a valid Missouri driver’s license (minimum Class F). A valid certificate in Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is preferred.

A valid Missouri PE Registration Certificate is required; PE licensure from another state will allow for hiring at the Engineer III level but applicant will be required to obtain a Missouri PE license within twelve months. Exceptional utility engineering experience beyond the minimum requirements may be considered in lieu of a PE license. A valid driver’s license (minimum Class F) is required.
A valid Missouri PE Registration Certificate is required. Individuals who have a PE Registration from another state may be hired as Engineer IV but will be required to obtain a Missouri Professional Engineer Registration Certification within 12 months to remain at the Engineer IV level. A valid driver’s license (minimum Class F) is required.
General knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts and practices.
Ability to:
Perform limited portions of broader work assignments under the direction of an experienced engineer.
Plan, organize, and coordinate technical work.
Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
Work courteously with customers, co-workers, and individuals in other departments.
Experience with Microsoft office suite.

A broad working knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts and practices.

Good understanding of City Utilities’ policies and procedures as well as outside governing regulations and standards pertaining to the natural gas and water distribution systems.
Ability to:
Plan, organize, supervise, and coordinate technical work and work closely with others.
Design, plan, organize, supervise, and coordinate technical work at all levels of complexity and effectively handle numerous assignments simultaneously.
Demonstrate and interpret policies and procedures, and have a good working knowledge of national, state, and local laws and regulations and apply utility engineering practices and techniques.
Work courteously with customers, co-workers, and individuals in other departments.
Work under pressure and meet close deadlines.
Teach, mentor, and oversee less experienced engineers and co-ops.
Supervisor and/or lead contractors as a project lead with a teamwork philosophy.

Proficient experience with Microsoft Office suite.
Typically, sedentary work. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required. Position may require bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling. Also, may require lifting up to 20 pounds, on occasion.
Normal office environment. Some outside field work as necessary.
Subject to Department of Transportation’s and/or Public Service Commission’s drug testing requirements. Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
